According to Eldridge Cleaver “The Black Panther Party played a positive role at a decisive moment toward the liberation of black people in America.” Do you agree?

I do agree with Eldridge Cleaver about The Black Panther Party playing a positive role at a very important moment toward the liberation of black people in America. The Black Panther Party did a lot for the surrounding community. The video we watched showed that some BPP members set up areas for children to eat for free during school days, which provided the children and parents with hope. The BPP message spread all across America and people came from the other side of the country to join the BPP, Eldridge Cleaver may have been a little extreme in his methods, but he was a good spokesperson for the BPP, especially after King was killed, “Cleaver viewed King’s assassination as an acrimonious and fatal repudiation of nonviolence and a signal for black people to “fight fire with fire,” to commence a “terrible and bloody chapter” of what he termed a “holocaust”” (252).
Because of this, Cleaver became more aggressive in his ways to liberate black people in America, “he asserted that the black community was effectively excluded from the economic process because it neither owned nor controlled sources of wealth such as land, natural resources, manufactured goods and products” (253). Cleaver even wanted to take over Merritt College as a fortress to force a shootout. Even if Cleaver became a little more extreme in his methods the Black Panther Party absolutely played a positive role.

I agree that the Black Panther party came at a pivotal time for black people in America. The Black people felt defenseless and powerless towards everything that was happening. In the video, they talked of violent killings of blacks that would happen at random and nothing could be done to stop this until the Black Panthers came along. The organization was able to give strength and power to black people as a united front. The timing behind the creation of the Black Panthers was a time of great divide within America between races. The cops were no help to this issue as they took part as well on the brutal killings that happened. “Huey P. newton and Bobby Seale foinded the Black Panther Party (BPP) for Self-Defense in Oakland, California in 1966 to demand self-determination througb the Ten Point Platform and Program”(251). The creation of such a papar was just so they could have a chance to protect themselves for being so wrongly accused of crimes and being punished for no reason aside from the color of their skin. To help better defend themselves they began arming themselves with guns. As seen from the video the BPP was able to give men and women more power when they began arming one another. This pwer given was what they had always wanted, because they felt they could now defend themselves against tyranny. With the added power created by the BPP their time was definitely advantageous to help liberate black people in America.
