Health of Virginians 1 Health of Virginians Student’s Name Instructor’s Name Course Date Health of Virginians 2 Health of Virginians Part I The health performance of Virginia in terms of determinants and outcomes is interesting, especially considering that it has averaged at around number 20 for many years. The state ranks 22 and 23 in such determinants and outcomes as diabetes, obesity, and smoking, and this pattern can be explained by the fact that these three issues are closely related. Obesity and smoking play a pivotal role in the determination of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes. In the 19 years that the rankings have taken place, it is only in 2013 that it experienced the most significant drop, moving to number 26 in the country.1 In 1999, 2016, and 2017, the state had its best performance, reaching number 19.1 Upon critically examining the state’s report, it can be argued that the state’s ranking could have remained at this position because the state has been improving in some aspects while doing poorly in others. If it wishes to achieve some tangible improvement, it could focus on some of those areas where it is performing poorly. The main determinants that Virginia should improve to attain better ranking are physical inactivity, chlamydia, meningococcal immunizations, mental health providers, and disparity in health status. These are the areas where the state has very poor performance when compared to its overall ranking. Response to these determinants can bring about significant improvements in the overall classification. Part II A careful examination of Petersburg City (PB), VA, shows interesting health patterns when compared to the overall outcomes and determinants in the state. The city has one of the poorest populations in the entire state, and this can be one of the reasons why the health Health of Virginians 3 outcomes are as worrying as they are. In this section, it will be explored through the principles of epidemiologic inquiry to establish its performance in the determinant of physical inactivity. Person In Petersburg in 2019, 28% of the population is physically inactive.2 This is quite a poor performance, compared to Virginia’s rate of 22%.2 Upon exploring the more in-depth details of the community as far as this determinant is concerned, more interesting patterns emerge. The highest rates of physical inactivity are noted among adults aged 45 years and above, with the more significant percentage of this being women.3 Economic status is also an important factor that shapes more interesting dynamics, with most of those found to have lower physical activity levels being less educated and also poorer. This is perhaps because of the lack of facilities and opportunities. Those are most significant risk of being physically inactive are poor women aged above 45 years old. Place Considering that Petersburg is primarily an urban area, it is difficult to determine the performance disparities between the rural and urban regions of this county. Physical inactivity is mainly affected by socioeconomic factors, and therefore geography, housing, and topography may not have any significant impact. However, it should be noted that poor housing is a sign of poverty, and this thus means that, generally, people with poor housing with also most likely have fewer opportunities and resources to engage in physical activity. Compared its neighboring counties, Petersburg has one of the poorest performance levels in physical inactivity. In the state, it also has a poor ranking, as well as at the national level. Period Over the past five years, the prevalence rate of physical inactivity in Petersburg has been Health of Virginians 4 almost the same (28% in 2019, 27% in 2018, 26% in 2017, 28% in 2016, and 29% in 2015).2 In Virginia, it has remained at 22% for all these years except in 2017, where it improved to 21%. At the national level, the physical inactivity rates have been better than Petersburg’s but worse than Virginia’s: (25.6% in 2018, 23.1% in 2017, 26.2% in 2016, and 22.6% in 2015).2 Conclusion From the findings and patterns identified in the study above, it is evident that older females in Petersburg should a target for an intervention aimed at improving their level of physical activity. This conclusion is based on the fact that this group has one of the weakest performance in the rankings of physical inactivity. Health of Virginians 5 Reference List 1. America’s Health Rankings. Primary risk factors are the most likely proximal influences on the health determinant being considered. Secondary risk factors are influences on primary risk factors, and contributing risk factors influence secondary risk factors. For example, if you selected obesity as the health determinant you wished to address, you may list “excess calorie intake” and “physical inactivity” as primary risk factors. For “excess calorie intake” you may then list “between-meal-snacks,” “high fat intake,” and “high sugar intake.” For each of these you would then add 3 attitudes, behaviors, or circumstances (ABCs) that contribute to them. In each case, there are more risk factors than you will record on this chart and a more complete listing will be necessary when you apply this in real situations; however, this gives you a general idea of how to examine risk factor relationships.
