My theory is that the sack of Constantinople led to the rapid exchange and transfer of Byzantine goods and elements of their culture in general across the continent. With so many soldiers and other various wanderers looting the city and carrying its treasures to other civilizations, I think the Byzantine style was quickly being exposed to countries like Russia and Italy. This, in turn, led to a sort of rebirth of the Byzantine style.
