In an effort to make courses more interactive and participatory, I would like to have graduate students give presentations throughout the semester. Ideally we would all log in to Adobe Connect at a specified time and students would take turns giving presentations. However, there are two potential problems with this approach Given that these are online courses, I don’t think that it’s appropriate to require students attend a lecture at a specific time. In my view, a big advantage of online courses is that we can attend and work according to our own schedules. We need to always be ready for network outages, so having a graded (or ungraded) presentation fully depend on everybody being effectively connected at the same time is kind of high risk. There are a LOT of you this semester So, I want to make sure that everybody has a way to create their presentations, record them, and post them, publicly, online in YouTube. I don’t have a lot of experience in this, though I have been successful at pushing some of my videos to YouTube. And, in my past experience, students seem to have figured out how to do this on their own. So, I’m not going to have much guidance for you other than to figure out how to do it on your own system so that you can easily create several presentations throughout this semester and post them to YouTube. For this first presentation, I want to keep it very simple, yet informative. I would like you to create a simple presentation on the topic, “How I created a presentation and made it available on YouTube.” It should be no longer than one minute, simply describing the software you used for making the presentation and your assessment of any strengths and weaknesses of the software. Your presentation should show a couple of slide transitions. Please note that using slides ends up looking a lot more professional than scrolling through a web page or a single paper you’ve written have your clear audio narrating the presentation Desirably, but not required, have a small inset of you as you’re narrating, adding to the “personal effect.” For some reason, when I gave a similar assignment last semester, everybody but one person ended up doing a presentation on their project proposal! This is not what I’m asking for! I only want something very simple that shows me that you have the technical skills to put together a simple presentation. Additionally, your description of the tools might be interesting for myself and other students, learning about new ways to put together professional YouTube presentations. You should post your presentation on YouTube and provide the URL for it. Please note that I will make a list of everybody’s presentation and the URLs, so everybody in the course will be able to view it. My assumption is that all of you, as young graduate students in computer science, have the skills to do this, or learn how to do this. If you do find yourself stumbling, please post requests for ideas to the Moodle General Forum for the course.
