The characteristics are universality, irreversibility, nonfunctionality, and causality. Universality is recognizing that although death is unexpected and unpredictable that it does happen to everyone and there is no way to run from it. Irreversibility means knowing that death can’t be undone. Once a living thing is dead, it is dead for good. Nonfunctionality describes the cessation of all bodily functions. All signs of life are gone from the being when they die. Causality is knowing that there is always a reason for death. Whether it be from disease or accident there is always a cause.
