*You need to describe the music beyond the basic categories of “diegetic” or “non-diegetic”. Statements such as “non-diegetic music begins when….or “diegetic music opens the scene”… are not descriptive enough.
*Describe what you hear – high low, ensemble/solo, vocal, instrumental, winds, brass, strings, keyboard, computerized music, percussion, rhythm, dynamics, slow/fast tempo, major/minor, etc. The point of this assignment is to describe the music and/or sounds, how they fit in with the action, then analyze why or how they cause the viewer to feel a certain way.
*If your clip uses a song from pop music, yo need to describe what you hear in the song and why you think the song was chosen for your particular scene (consider the lyrics too). You cannot just say the name of the song and/ or singer.
* If you say the mucic intensifies…”or “The music cretes a felling of conflict…”, you also need to describe what you hear in themusic that reates that particular feeling.
* Identify a portion of the clip that you want to discuss, addressing in particular the various functions of the music with the clip. Keep in mind the relevance of the techniques of narrative film, and their interaction with the music, sound effects and dialogue. (Use parenthetic times to clarify points in the clip.)
* In your paper, use the appropriate terminology that you are acquiring from the lessons. Think of this as an opportunity to utilize the O.A.R.S. model in examining the material.
* Use the clip as the header of our post (e.g. The Empire Strikes Back: A look in the Mirror).
* Begin with your examination of the ckip with the following:
Select a start time and a stop time for your analysis. It doesn’t have to be the complete length of the “topic” you have selected. You may want to focus on only a portion of the selected clip, and that a grea way to delve into the finer details.
* Always count the shots in your selected clip.
* Identify any implied temporal ellipses, and observe which techniques of narrative film have contributed to conveying he passage of a period of time, from one shot to the next.
* Begin your initial post with the header identifying the start and top times you have selected (e.g. 0:00 to 1:11) and the number of shots contained in your seleted clip (e.g. 17 shots). Also, identify emporal ellipses, if any (e.g. no temporal elipses). Such an example would look like this:
“the Empire Strikes Back: a look in the Mirror;
Selected clip: 0:00 to 1:11; 17 shots; no discernible temporal ellipses”.
Also identify any music present in the selected clip as diegetic or nondiegetic.
Diegetic music: Identify the implied source of the music within the world of film (either on-screen or off-screen:; identify start and stop times ( e.g. diegetic music starts at 1:13 with the cut to the beach scene, stops at 2:42 when it can no longer be heard”).
Non-diegetic music: Identify by time any cue-ins or cue-outs of the nondiegetic music (e.g. non-diegetic music cue in at 0:29 and ues out at 1:12).
Identifying specifically the presence of both diegetic music and/or nondiegeticmusic within the selected clip will facilitate addressing the purpose and functions of the music in relation o the techniques of narrative film. Detail such as the cue-in and cue-outs of nondiegetic music, or the presence of diegeic music in a scene are well planned, and they acquire sinificance when considered in relationship to techniques of narrative film.
