The Visual Elements

                                                     The Visual Elements

This week we will be delving into the individual visual components that made artworks so compelling. These are known as the visual elements and include: light, line, color, shape, form, texture, and space. Think of these as the essential building blocks or artist’s toolkit that enable artists to make visually compelling and dynamic images and objects. Developing an appreciation of these elements will enhance your visual literacy, giving you the ability to put visual experiences into words.

For your first worksheet, you’ll apply what you’ve learned from your reading of the textbook and Slideshare lectures toward analyses of select artworks. Once your grades are posted, you can then use my feedback to enhance your understanding and apply these concepts toward your final project analyses. Using 3-4 sentences each, answer the questions below. Make sure your answers are thoughtfully written and edited for errors in spelling and punctuation. Then, submit your answers by posting them to the dropbox by the due date. This assignment is worth 10 points toward your overall grade.

Cautionary note: Please make sure and use your own words in your answer. Don’t lift or slightly reword entire passages from your textbook or an online source. This is considered plagiarism, for which you’ll receive no credit. Use your textbook to provide factual support for your own description of these works.

Describe the artist’s use of line in this print. What types of lines are present here? Consider the quality of line, as well as how the artist has applied them (e.g. hatching, stippling and/or cross-hatching). What are the functions of these lines (to create texture, depth, shape, etc.)? Are any complementary or analogous colors present? Use slides 53-60 from “The Visual Elements” lecture, your readings on pp. 69-73, as well as these web resources to help you better understand these concepts: http://archive.artsmia.org/artists_toolkit/watch_color_primary.cfm.html and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWW_UbrkBEw

Remember to consider different types of perspective that may be involved and used simultaneously to heighten the illusion in the image. Can you locate one or more vanishing points? If so, where? Use slides 67-74 from “The Visual Elements” lecture, your readings on pp. 73-76, as well as these web resources to help you better understand these concepts: http://archive.artsmia.org/artists_toolkit/watch_space_perspective.cfm.html and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U11B_0FCn6o
