Instructions
Counseling skills are developed over time with practice and supervision. Professional counselors spend 4 to 5 years in supervised practice before they are licensed. Practice with a partner is a key part of this course to enhance your counseling skills development.
You will be assigned by the instructor a practice partner (the client) who is another student in the class. It is helpful that you are both learning the same skills together. You can meet on-line to practice the skills with the use of Canvas/Zoom/Skype. Students who live locally may desire to meet for the practice sessions.

Organize a one-hour practice session with your chosen partner and practice the Intake Process with him or her. Advise your partner that you will need him or her next week for 2.5 hours to complete a recording of an in-take session and one of a SFC skills session.
Read the Intake Rubric (Links to an external site.)https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/ems-curriculum/master-course-supplementals/CNC640/In-Take+Rubric.docx. This is what your instructor will use to grade you when you come to do your recording next week. You will want to address every aspect of this rubric in your practicing this week and in recording next week.
Write a 1-page response where you analyze your experience in doing this practice intake session. This is likely your first time doing this type of activity so what was it like? How did you feel? What surprised you? What did you learn? What do you need to watch out for when you come to do your “official” recorded session next week?
