Social change, the alteration of culture and society over time, is a vital part of social life. Social change has included four social revolutions, a change from Gemeinschaft to Gesellschaft societies, capitalism and industrialization, modernization, and global stratification. Ethnic conflicts and social movements indicate the cutting edges of social change. Theories of social change include evolutionary theories, cyclical theories, and conflict theories. The processes of social change are invention, discovery, and diffusion. Cultural lag refers to how some elements of a culture lags technological changes. Technology is a driving force behind social change and can shape an entire society. This become evident when analyzing the impact, the computer has had on American society. The information superhighway is also likely to perpetuate social inequalities both nationally and globally.
Social movements involve a large number of people who organize to promote or resist social change. Social movements can be classified as alterative, redemptive, reformative, or transformative depending on whether their target is individuals or society and whether the amount of change desired is partial or complete. Because the mass media are the gatekeepers for social movements, their favorable or unfavorable coverage greatly affects a social movement and tactics are chosen with this in mind. Social movements go through distinct stages: initial unrest, mobilization, organization, institutionalization, and decline.
Environmental problems affect nations at all levels of industrialization. Due to the widespread burning of fossil fuels in internal combustion engines, the Most Industrialized Nations face smog, acid rain, global warming, and the greenhouse effect. Currently the worst environmental problems are found in the former Soviet Union, in part due to the Communist Party’s unrestrained exploitation of natural resources. And the rush of the Least Industrialized Nations to industrialize is adding to global environmental decay.
