31 Mar Marriage and Divorce
This week we are going over Chapter 12 which deals with Marriage and Family. Because there are so many cultural variations on family structure, it is hard to define. Nevertheless, in the text, family is defined broadly as two or more people who consider themselves related by blood, marriage, or adoption. Marriage and family patterns vary remarkably across cultures, but four universal themes in marriage are mate selection, descent, inheritance, and authority.
The three primary sociological perspectives discussed in the chapter are: functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism. According to the functionalist perspective, the family carries out important social functions, but conversely, conflict theorists focus on how families help perpetuate inequality, especially in gender relations. Symbolic interactionists explore the meanings that people give their marital relationships, particularly in regard to the household division of labor.
Family diversity in U.S. culture is related to social class rather than race or ethnicity. One-parent families, childless families, blended families, and gay families represent some of the different types of families today. Poverty is especially significant for one-parent families, most of which are headed by women.
Studies on divorce have focused on the problems of measuring the impact of divorce and remarriage on children and ex-spouses. Time seems to heal most children’s wounds over the divorce of their parents, but research suggests that a minority carry the scars of divorce into adulthood. Men and women experience divorce differently; for men, it often results in a weakening of their relationships with their children, while for women it means a decline in their standard of living. Although most divorced people do remarry, the rate of remarriage has slowed considerably
Marriage and Divorce
In the U.S. we have a very high divorce rate (anywhere between about 42% and 45% of marriages will end in divorce). We also have a very high marriage rate (nearly 90% of all Americans will get married). Why do so many people get married when there is such a high chance of divorce?
