1. You may have a long history of thinking about Rachel Carson and her ideas too. Or you may have heard little about her but have a vague impression (positive or negative) from media coverage. Or this may be the first time you’ve heard of her. My main hope for this topic is that you’ll share your thoughts about Carson, her writing, and her ideas, even if you don’t know much about her yet. Have Silent Spring and Rachel Carson shaped your interests in nature or your environmental career plans? 2. Take a pesticide safari in your own home and then pick one chemical that you discover along the way. Do some Internet research on the chemical, and tell us its basic chemical structure, how it is used (what problem should it solve? how is it applied? where?), and if you have used it. Does the product with the chemical have a warning label? Is the label easy to understand? What if you didn’t know much about science—or speak English well? Then discuss the chemical’s risks and benefits–why do people use it? Does it work for the intended purpose? How do you know? And make a convincing argument about whether or not the results of using it are worth the risks.

Please take a look at the PowerPoint presentation attached and then post thoughtful comments representing your growing understanding (enlightened by Dr. Vogel’s PowerPoint) of how pesticides kill and deter organisms, how they can move around in the environment, how they are studied (or not studied), why people use them (or don’t use them), how they’re regulated (or mis-regulated)–etc, etc!
4. Are brown marmorated stink bugs (or other invasive insects in your area) worthy of all this attention and expense? If spraying to stop them were effective but posed human health hazards, would it be worth the risks? What if the risks were to other insects and natural ecosystems?
