It was the first such exchange since2017 and possibly a sign of increasing tension in the region. While this particularexample of state-to-state violence is part of a much longer and complex history, it doesraise the issue of war during a pandemic. Choose two hypothetical causes of war/sourcesof misperception from Van Evera or Jervis and:a) In your own words, describe how each mechanism you choose is hypothesized tomake war between countries more likely.b) Argue whether the global pandemic is likely to have any impact on the effects of thetwo causes of war you choose. Use the text plus any other evidence to support yourclaim.22. Chapter 18 of your textbook (Race in world politics) makes the case that race is a“fundamental concern of international relations.” Some of the contemporary examples ofrace given by your book are the Global War on Terror and the UN World ConferenceAgainst Racism.a) What is another more contemporary example of race as an important source or driverof international relations? Your example should be specific and part of current orrecent (~2010 – present) international interactions.b) Which theoretical framework among those we have surveyed would you use to studythe example you cited? Why is this framework appropriate for understanding the roleof race in international relations?3. How much progress in gender equality can be attributed to the UN (Baylis, Smith, &Owen 2017: 275)? Does this show that international institutions matter for internationalrelations? Please engage the realist argument that says: institutions are merely windowdressing for traditional great power politics which is driven by states and morespecifically the great powers.4. “Gender doesn’t matter for international relations.” Explain why/how this statement isfalse.Essay (40 points)Both Stephen Van Evera and Robert Jervis argue that there has been a “nuclear revolution” ininternational relations. Use two different theoretical frameworks (among realism, liberalism, constructivism, poststructuralism, and feminist IR) to make two separate arguments about howmuch international relations changed with the spread of nuclear weapons to the major powers.• Note, your two theories may reach different conclusions about how much the revolutionreally changed international relations…or they may reach the same conclusion.• Your answer should include a brief description of each theory in your own words, andwhat “stuff” each theory focuses our scholarly attention upon (ontology).• Also, don’t get too caught up in the history—your grade will be based upon how well youapply each theory to the what the scholars call the “nuclear revolution.” Since this examis open book, I am certain you all are able to look up the history. Be sure to describe eachtheory in your own words, and that apply each theory to points made by Van Evera andJervis about the ways in which the nuclear revolution makes international relationsfundamentally different (or not!).
