Let’s imagine the Mayborn School of Journalism and UNT College of Business are hosting a seminar for small businesses on Saturday, Oct. 27. Fifty people have signed up for the event, and they include the owners of mom-and-pop restaurants, retail boutiques, art galleries, hair salons and computer repair shops. Nearly all of the businesses are less than a year old.Professor Keller has been asked to deliver a 20-minute presentation on how small businesses can best use PR, but she’s swamped and asks you to choose the topic, write the speech and prepare visual aids. Name it ‘yourlastname_speech memo.’ Memo is worth 25 points. Research your topic and prepare the speech. Write to accommodate Professor Keller’s voice, mannerisms and style. Share information that is relevant and important to the seminar’s audience. The speech must run 20 minutes, which equates to roughly 2,500 words. (The average person can speak 120-150 words per minute.) You may show ONE video clip, but it must be less than 60 seconds. (If you use a clip, you must include the YouTube link in your slides. The clip must be public domain and free of copyright restrictions.) Include cues and stage directions in the script. Remember, these are written in parentheses. A real script would be triple- spaced with a larger than average font so that it would be easy for the speaker to read. In addition, a real speech would also cover only the first 2/3 or the page. However, in the interest of saving paper, please use 11.5 Times New Roman font, double-space your text and use the full sheet. Upload this as a separate doc or docx file. Name it ‘yourlastname_speechscript.’ Speech is worth 100 points.
