12 Jul Instructions: consider your ideal educational experience usi
Instructions: consider your ideal educational experience using assigned readings and video clips. Feel free to locate additional sources and consider personal experiences that might guide your ideal educational experience. The experience can be a school for pre-K, K-12, higher education, corporate training, and more. Consider online options, face-to-face options, homeschooling, and new media technologies. After discussing ideas for this experience in class, create an advertisement, promotional flyer, copy for a radio spot, or brief (4-slide) PowerPoint or Prezi presentation.Below are the links to this weeks readings and video clips to use for the assignment: (the attachment is also a reading from this week that you could use)RSA Animate- Changing education paradigms https://brandman.blackboard.com/bbcswebdav/pid-10116957-dt-content-rid-48862304_2/xid-48862304_2Forget what you know: Jacob Barnett at TEDxTeenhttps://brandman.blackboard.com/bbcswebdav/pid-10116958-dt-content-rid-48862305_2/xid-48862305_2Unschooling: Home learning the future of US Education?https://brandman.blackboard.com/bbcswebdav/pid-10116959-dt-content-rid-48862306_2/xid-48862306_2Unschooling: the new class of learninghttps://brandman.blackboard.com/bbcswebdav/pid-10116960-dt-content-rid-48862307_2/xid-48862307_2Author Stephen Brookfield on adult education todayhttps://brandman.blackboard.com/bbcswebdav/pid-10116961-dt-content-rid-48862308_2/xid-48862308_2Andragogy (Adult Learning)https://brandman.blackboard.com/bbcswebdav/pid-10116962-dt-content-rid-48862309_2/xid-48862309_2 Other Readings from The Norton Reader Book:The following readings from the Norton Reader Fredrick Douglass, Learning to Read (404) John Holt, How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading or other Norton Reader article selected by the instructor Jonathan Kozol, Fremont High School (423) Caroline Bird, College is a Waste of Time and Money (428) Adrienne Rich, Taking Women Students Seriously (443) Mike Rose, Blue Collar Brilliance (449) NJIT, Andragogy & Pedagogy, http://web.njit.edu/~ronkowit/teaching/andragogy.htmHere is an additional reading that may be of interest: Eudora Welty, Clamorous to Learn (409)Your readings begin with Frederick Douglass who was born a slave and learned to read, when it was “almost an unpardonable offense to teach slaves to read in this Christian country” (347). The theme of reading continues with John Holt giving advice on what works and does not work by offering vignettes that lead to a set of interesting precepts. Jonathan Kozol’s essay offers a profile of an over-crowded high school in Los Angeles that could have easily been the portrait of a failing school in New York City, Chicago or Miami. Caroline Bird’s article challenges us with the rather bleak idea that college may not be a good investment for everyone. The poet and essayist Adrienne Rich draws a parallel, in her address focused on the teachers of women, between the instruction and instructors of minority students and the questions posed by her about teaching women; the two situations include similar pedagogical approaches. Rich broadens the discussion to women in society and how the views of women in the academy mirror sexism of the society at large. Mike Rose paints a sympathetic and compassionate portrait of the many struggles first generation college students face in trying to pursue an education. Finally, the link provides a brief description of what the terms andragogy and pedagogy mean. The reading selections for this week will help you complete both your writing assignment and Discussion Board assignments for this week, so be sure to plan your reading time accordingly.
