As you have discovered throughout your program, there are many forensic psychology settings in which forensic psychology professionals may work. Forensic psychology professionals may work with offenders in the courts, in prisons, in halfway houses, or in community settings. Forensic psychology professionals may also work with crime victims in settings such as domestic violence shelters. There are probably many reasons why you chose the forensic psychology setting you did for your field experience. Perhaps the forensic population with which you will be working within the setting intrigues you. Perhaps you expect to develop professionally, taking on new roles and responsibilities within a particular forensic psychology setting. You may even expect to network with colleagues in a particular setting who will help you begin your career as a forensic psychology professional.

When embarking on a new endeavor, it is not unusual to set goals before you even begin. The goals you form regarding your field experience will vary depending on the forensic psychology setting and the field experience setting. Forensic psychology settings may differ in the populations they serve, the procedures they use, and the roles and responsibilities of forensic psychology trainees.

In this Discussion, you explore your motives for choosing a forensic psychology setting. You also consider your goals for the field experience.

Journal Entry: Field Experience Expectations

Journaling is an activity used by students and professionals alike for self-reflection. It has many personal and professional benefits including reducing stress and increasing learning (Alford, Malouff, & Osland, 2005; Liuolienë & Metiûnienë, 2009). Throughout your field experience you will be asked to journal about your thoughts, experiences, and/or insights. You are asked in some weeks to share selected journal entries with your peers, as your reflections and experiences will benefit them and vice versa.

The assignment (300–600 words):

Write a journal entry that includes the following:

• An explanation of your expectations, aspirations, and/or reservations for and about the field experience.
• An explanation of any support you think you might need during the field experience.

Support your Journal Entry with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.
