Scenario: You are working the midnight shift as a police officer. You receive a call to respond to a one-car accident where the car left the roadway and impacted with a tree. Upon your arrival, you see the badly damaged car up against the tree. There are no skid marks apparent and no witnesses around. You approach the car and find the apparent driver behind the wheel. You immediately recognize the driver to be the mayor of your town. You immediately notice signs that the mayor is impaired by alcohol, including the smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath, the slurring of his speech, and the lethargy he is exhibiting. The mayor tells you that he swerved to avoid a dog, lost control and hit the tree. The mayor is not injured. When you ask the mayor if he has consumed alcohol, he tells you that he was at retirement dinner and only had one glass of wine. The mayor asks you to just complete an accident report and give him a ride home. You question him further, telling him you are concerned that he was driving while impaired. The mayor tells you that he is not impaired and not to worry about anything because you never actually saw him driving. The mayor goes on to tell you that he will not say anything to anyone, and he lets you know that he has a lot of influence with what goes on at the police station, and that he has had his eye on you as an up-and-comer. You know that you could just complete an accident report identifying the cause of the accident as swerving to avoid an animal in the roadway. If you do not tell anyone that the mayor was drinking and he does not tell anyone, what is the worst that could happen?

I am going to select scenario 2, regarding the mayor and the accident with the tree. This situation will put anybody in a sticky situation because you both can have each others’ careers in your hands. It can be a test for the both of you, ethically.
Placing myself in the shoes of an officer who is fundamentally being bribed by the Mayor of the town is something that must be difficult to manage. Thus, thinking of a proper and compelling response to the present circumstance will be generally hard for me with this venture.

Identify the Ethical Dilemma Raised By the Facts in the Case Scenario
According to Levine (2014), an ethical dilemma is when one faces a problem with decision-making based on two conflicting options, none of which is ethically acceptable or morally upright. In this case scenario, the ethical dilemma is that the police officer must report on the accident. Still, the mayor insists that the officer shouldn't include that the mayor was under alcohol. On the one hand, the officer can see that the condition under which the mayor's car was after the accident and that the mayor smelled alcohol could be the possible cause. On the other hand, the mayor insists that he was trying to dodge a dog, which was the cause of the accident. These options present an ethical dilemma to the police officer as he cannot find a relatively straightforward solution to include in the report.
This case is an ethical dilemma because the officer experiences a conflict between alternative ways to accident reporting. Choosing either of the alternatives will potentially make the officer compromise on the moral principle and violate the ethical standards of honesty (Levine, 2014). Still, the officer is obligated to write a report. Therefore, this case challenges the integrity and honesty parts of ethics.
The main factor that led to this ethical dilemma is the competing interests between the mayor and the police officer. On the one hand, the officer can see that the mayor is drunk, which should be included in the report. Contrarily, he cannot confirm that he saw the mayor drive his car under the influence. Also, the mayor claims that he isn't impaired and warns the officer from mentioning anything about him. Therefore, the competing interests come because the officer is competing to save his job while the mayor is competing to protect his reputation (Worley, 2016). The officer should consider the effects of violating the ethical principles of honesty while writing the report before he takes an action course.
