Each paper should address the questions/instructions listed in the assignment details and the following points: 1) A brief summary of the article (2-3 paragraphs), and 2) a description of how the article relates to the assigned class concept (1-2 paragraphs). Please note, it is your job to demonstrate to me through this assignment that you not only understand the concepts covered in class but can also identify their application in the sports industry. As such, it is important, particularly as it relates to requirement #2, that you provide more than a 1-2 sentence description of a concept from class. It is expected that the response paper be AT LEAST a full one page, going onto the second page.
For this article review, you may use the example in the textbook from chapter 6, page 134 (Athletes Using Star Power for Social Activism). Or find another article where the athlete/player was an extension of the core sport product. If you choose a different article please reference it.
As a sports marketer, think about how a player as an extension of your core product may help or hurt your brand. Provide an example of both, where a player hurt the product/brand (think domestic violence/drugs/etc.) and an example of when a player helped the brand (having Des Ridder as a Heisman candidate certainly helps the brand of UC Football and no, you can’t use this as an example now 😉 Think of activism/charity or maybe it’s just a fun and great player that draws attention to your product/brand. How can you POSITION this player and DIFFERENTIATE your product in the market? Lots of good info in chapters 6 and 7.
Relate the article back to a concept you’ve learned in class. Your article review needs to be 2-3 paragraphs at least. Be somewhat detailed and thorough for full credit both summarizing the article and answering the additional assignment questions. Please break up your review into sections so it’s easier to read…since I have over 100 to look at!!
