For this discussion, find 3 of your favorite books from childhood or 3 current storybooks that show good examples of childrens thinking and language (chapter age group). Then pick 3 that have limitations of preoperational thought and aspects of the language that seem poorly suited to young children and why. Use information found in your book chapter (or in a good website) to back up how these books are either good or bad. Books dont always have to be educational to contribute significantly to the education of children. Playing with language, matching language to pictures, and developing listening skill are all critical parts of early education.
If you dont think that you have any bad books, discuss how the not-so-bad books are different from the good books. My favorite storybook during my childhood and in my life is Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. The book is perfect for children ages 4 to 6, but even younger kids love it. The illustrations are great, it makes for wonderful reading with parent and child (or grandparent). Getting to make sounds when the wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws helps the readers share the scary part of the story and the book also shows how Max can share his anger at his mom, but its ok to love her too. Children are introduced to language and are motivated to learn to read because it becomes a favorite story. So that is my example, so you take it from there and let us know your storybooks.
