When the orders for campus closure came in March 2020, I had about 48 hours to back up my hard disc, pack essential materials in boxes, and evacuate campus. At the time, I never imagined that I would be working remotely for the next 5 months. While the University states that remote access and learning are an integral part of our Continuity of Learning Plan, no one imagined that we would be working out of our crisis playbook for almost half of a calendar year. As such, the COVID-19 Pandemic represents a strategic inflection point, because its impact has the potential to render the previous Vision and Mission of the University obsolete (Gamble, 2021, p. 17).
To say that the Fall 2020 campus reopening plan has been controversial would be an understatement. The previous business model, students studying in a face to face setting, is largely untenable due to the pandemic. Our Fall 2020 re-opening plan therefore suffers from two conflicting priorities, the urgent need to re-open campus operations and the urgent need to ensure the safety of the Universitys students, faculty and staff. These conflicting priorities have made planning and implementation difficult and painful (Beer, 2020, discusses conflicting priorities and its impact on strategy).
The major workaround that has been attempted is a pivot of our basic business model to online education (Guillen, 2020). The results from this pivot have been mixed across campus. While the College of Business has deep capabilities for online learning, other colleges are playing catchup under less than ideal circumstances. Online learning builds upon the College of Businesss existing capabilities (Guillen, 2020). Thus, the shift to online learning enables the College of Business to adapt to the strategic inflection point presented to us by COVID-19.
