First of all,

Write 250 words related to this:

Write a Substantive Posting (SP) in response to the following prompt.

Remember that your goal is to write an argument in which you interpret textual evidence to reach a conclusion about the text under consideration.

Think of your SP as a mini-essay and write it accordingly. Use all the conventions of standard academic writing: capitalization and punctuation, complete sentences, well-formed paragraphs, and so on. Whenever you employ textual evidence, be sure to provide a citation so that other learners may follow up on your ideas.

Once youve completed your SP, think about the contributions of the other participants in the forum. Find one or more that make you think more deeply, or with which you disagree, and write a Response Posting (RP).

Remember that although RPs are very short, you should pay attention to your writing in them. Do not write them the way you would a text or an email. Use proper capitalization and punctuation, and form complete sentences. Provide a citation for any textual evidence you use.

For a full description of my expectations for Substantive and Response Postings, see the Discussion Forum Expectations document in the This Course module.  For more information on writing about literature and writing academic arguments, see the Useful Resources module.

The prompt for this forum posting is somewhat different from those to which you have become accustomed.  For this posting, I’d like you to reflect on the cultural engagements of medieval textuality.

Choose one or two texts read so far this term (including The Nun ‘s Priest’s Tale or The Book of Margery Kempe, if you wish).  I recommend selecting one or two very short passages to focus on.

Then, drawing on your chosen text(s) but seeking to reach larger conclusions about medieval texts more generally, explore one of the following:

1) how do medieval texts reflect their cultural contexts?

or

2) how do medieval texts work to shape their cultural contexts?

Then write 50 words answering this (what do you think of what this person wrote, do you agree with him etc:

they cast off the light yoke of Christ and thrust their necks under the burden of drunkenness, hatred, argument, pg 45

the fire kindled by the hands of these pagans executed Gods just revenge on the nation for its crimes, pg46

Bedes history is one of the classic examples of how medieval texts tried to shape their cultural context.

Bede was a devout Christian and wanted everyone to follow the doctrine of God. One problem is that not everyone is going to listen to a monk preach about God and become indoctrinated straight away. He needed to convince large numbers of people in a more efficient and convincing way which is where his skills of academia come in.

He wrote these histories to be convincing in the actual retelling of events that occurred, but credited the successes and failures to how devout of a Chrisitian the historical figures were.

In the two passages above Bede tells us how the Britons turned to heinous crimes once their land seemed to be gifted by the grace of God, even our Lords own flock and their pastors too (45). As punishment, God had their lands pillaged by Pagans (46).

Bede wants the nation to read this history and associate God with success because thats what he believes and what he wants everyone else to believe in order for Christianity to grow. Also, people are very self-centred most of the time so they would need a compelling reason to change their ways, and whats more convincing than not being pillaged and dying of the plague? Bede uses his scholarly writing and convincing connections to shape the minds of the medieval masses and attempt an early form of propaganda in a way.
