3) Your grade will primarily come from the cultural content that you reveal, demonstrating some research, regarding one of the culture groups you choose below.  The report will also be graded on spelling, grammar and overall organization, including the quality of your resources.

Maasai people of Kenya & Tanzania

A Day in the Life of a Maasai Girl
by: Sherel McPherson

My name is Naserian and I am a twelve-year-old Maasai girl.  I love my name because it is symbolic for the peaceful one.  My tribe lives in Kenya and we are very authentic. Despite modernization, my tribe has been able to hold on to most of our cultural customs and traditions. We still survive the same way that our ancestors did generations ago, and everyone has a role to play here.  My elders act as guardians, guiding us through life and preparing us for life as adults. In the morning, an elder who is in charge announces our daily agenda.  Elder women use their knowledge and skill to teach us how to be of significant use within the household. Our duties include building the Inkajijik (house), fetching water, collecting firewood, milking cattle and cooking for the family.  The boys in our tribe are taught to herd the livestock, and go through their own life lessons.  The cattle are main part of our wealth and food, and its up to young and middle-aged men to herd them.  The senior warriors of the tribe act as security and watch over the villages and livestock.  Their jobs also include teaching the young boys how to be strong and how to become warriors as well. They learn everything from taking care of their livestock to protecting their families from harm.

Eventually after the elders have given the youth their knowledge, the girls become wives, and the boys become warriors who are eligible to start a family. Despite the fact that I love my culture, outsiders do not agree with some of my cultures practices. Most of the females do not have any education at all.  Though it has been my dream to go to school and become a teacher. I have never been granted the opportunity to do so.  It is difficult for any girl in my village to attend school because of the many barriers that prohibit it. There are physical barriers, economical barriers, and social barriers. Physical barriers include the safety and distance to and from school. Economical barriers like a lack of money or trades prevent families from being able to afford to send the kids to school. However, the biggest barrier is my culture and its traditions. Maasai women work hard to take care of our families so school is not always a possibility.

Another reason outsiders frown upon our culture is because we practice female circumcision. Female circumcision is normal, and it marks a girls rite of passage into adulthood. Females are circumcised to become a woman and then we are married to a man chosen by our loving fathers in exchange for cattle and fish.  This is done because of a lack of money and schooling, so to prevent us from being impoverished, the families send us off early. Families circumcise the girls between the ages of eleven through thirteen but in some cases much younger. The young boys go through a circumcision ceremony as well to be initiated as a warrior but its not frowned upon as much as female circumcision is by outsiders.  Although female circumcision is painful, my tribe appreciates the practice very much. This practice is sacred because it was passed down to us from generations ago. Although many try to ban female circumcisions we choose not to take any action, because the fear of upsetting our ancestors. Many Maasai people believe that if we put an end to our practices that our entire community will be cursed. While outsiders want the Maasai community to be more modern, we work hard to keep our old traditions alive. In fact, another tradition that we take part in that our ancestors passed down is that we survive off livestock. Cows, goats, and sheep are the primary source of income for the Maasai. We use livestock for trade and as money to buy things. All that our diet consists of is meat, milk, and cow blood. Although we drink the cows blood, we do not kill the cow, nor do we eat the flesh of the cow. Cattle is very essential to the Maasai community, and we love taking care of them. Our elders taught us to take diligent care of our livestock because it makes them worthy of a higher price. My grandmother used to say, Meishoo iyiook enkai inkishu o-nkera, which means, May creator give us cattle and children.

The children are also important to the community because we are the future and the elders enjoy passing down their knowledge so that we can keep the tribe striving. In fact, my own brother is a big part of movement. After his circumcision (warrior initiation), he stayed in the Emanyatta (warriors camp) for ten years. This camp is where warriors learn about the importance of leadership, how to direct a tribe, and animal husbandry. They will spend up to ten years there and then from there they attend the Eunoto ceremony. This is the ceremony that my brother just completed and is where he was chosen to become a senior warrior. There are many different ceremonies, but this one in particular is important to us because my brother has made our family very proud. He looks very strong now. He is tall, and his hair is gone, and he wears a bright red sheet. He is very accustomed to his new persona. My brother, now a man has undergone a series of lessons and pain to become the warrior he is now. He did not let his family down and the elders treat him with respect. It is moments like this where the true authentic Maasai pride is felt. I can tell by the looks from the elders as they watch my brother that they are proud. The sounds of happiness and joy can not only be heard but felt as the warriors scream, sing, and dance. My mother is really excited about my brothers achievement and she cannot wait for him to start a family of his own one day.
