For this essay, you will conduct detailed research into a debatable, controversial topic related to the documentary you wrote your analysis essay on. You will provide your reader with a snapshot of both sides of the controversy without investing yourself in the essay or presenting evidence or your discussion points with bias. Your topic should not deviate too far from the topic of your documentary. Extreme deviation must be justified in writing. All controversial ideas have opposing sides that feed off the other, and it is your job to uncover the debate and reveal it in your essay.

Your audience will be your peers and instructor, other educated adults who are interested in your topic and research. However, they will be skeptical and critical of your work because you are not a qualified, credentialed expert.

• Online News Outlets are a good place to start preliminary and basic research
• Popular Journalism sources, such as New York Times or Popular Science
• Opinion pieces and letters to the editor are useful for finding opinions
• Other documentaries will offer alternative perspectives and information
• Professional articles from privately held, professional organizations and associations
• Scholarly journals articles are an academic course (which you will need 2) that offer academic perspectives and well-researched information
• Academic publications found on academic institutional websites (.edu)

Develop an academic voice by:
• Using the right words to avoid ambiguity and bias; exhibiting scholarly indifference
• Writing with varied sentence structure and complexity; using Standard American English grammar
Demonstrate professional writing by:
• Properly punctuating and using correct mechanics over 90% of the time
• Formatting your work to meet MLA or APA standards
• Using quality, trusted, academic sources from writers and credible researchers
Demonstrate focus by:

Essay Requirements
• 950-1,200 words… (percentage of final grade deducted for underage and overage)
• 12 point, Times New Roman or Garamond font (no other font or size, please)
• MLA or APA format and citation style (pick one, stick with it, be consistent)
• Works Cited/Reference Page with corresponding in-text citations
