  2. Introduce this piece as your topic, and then, at the end of the first paragraph, make a claim about it that needs to be proven (THIS IS THE THESIS). You may come up with your own claim or use one of the samples offered below (this list will be added to as we continue with new material)               
  3. In succeeding paragraphs introduce evidence and explain why that evidence supports the claim. (you might use one piece of evidence per paragraph, say)            
  4. Read two secondary sources for possible use in your essay (this is optional, MLA format)         
  5. Minimum three full pages.          
  6. Due date: Oct. 14        
Sample Theses:
In the story A&P, the narrator Sammy acts out of regard for himself and not to ‘save’ the three girls from embarrassment.
 ‘A Country Husband’ represents  suburban culture in the 1950’s as very stifling.
In ‘The Giaconda Smile’ Mr. Hutton is a character who is very self-aware yet strangely, and hilariously, unable to change his behavior.
The Disabled Soldier’ is a story that proves people measure happiness through their relation to others, and not necessarily through the intrinsic value of their experience.
In ‘Home’ Mike is constantly being confronted with a hypocritical attitude from family and strangers alike.
Throughout the story ‘The Three Day Blow’ there are symbolic details that point to Nick’s internal conflict of whether to lead a practical, domestic life or a life free from responsibility. 
‘Exhortation’ is funny because it uses an everyday, bureaucratic office setting and euphemistic (inoffensive), obscure language to mask what sounds like horrific work.
