n general, your success stories should be specific examples from your life. Have each narrative based on one of your accomplishments or achievements (and ideally attached to several skill-sets).
Remember, you can use success stories from your
employment history,
accomplishments in college,
work with organizations, clubs, or teams, etc.
For this assignment, please focus on ONE SPECIFIC SUCCESS STORY.
You will want to develop this story (write multiple drafts of it) with plenty of detail and specific information, but you will also want it to be concise and succinct.
Becoming articulate about your success stories can help make you stand out during the job search process. The anecdotes can help in composing application letters, doing email correspondence with potential employers, and interacting during job interviews. These stories can give you specific examples of things you have accomplished connected to a position of employment. Concretely describing your transferable skills in action will make a much greater impression on a potential employer. Also, fleshing-out success stories can help you discover your strongest transferable skills, if youve never thought much about these skills before now.
CONTENT CONCERNS
Good success stories often capture all these points:
Your goal: what you wanted to accomplish
Some kind of hurdle, obstacle, or constraint you faced.
A description of what you did, step by step (use action verbs). (Capture your transferable skill sets in action!). This section will be the bulk of the essay.
A description of the outcome or result (What did you accomplish?).
Any measurable/quantifiable statement of that outcome that you can recall (in order to prove your achievement).
 Warning
In general, avoid success stories about
accomplishments during your high school years (too far back in time);
details focusing on a recovery from a serious injury (too full of clichs, and not enough skill sets covered);
achievements related to team sports (too much we instead of I).
**Weed-out all mistakes. Just a few errors may mean failure!**
FORMAT AND OTHER REMINDERS
You will create a final draft that will be at least a full 3 pages but not go over 3 1/2 pages.
On the final draft you will use one inch margins, 12 point type size, Times New Roman font, and double spacing. Always remember to number your pages (for all projects, for all classes, for any professional-world project!). Also, use the four single-spaced Memo Format headings as shown in the examples!
See syllabus schedule document or Modules for due date.
Check the Course Announcements on Canvas for details on how to upload your assignment.
TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE WRITING PROCESS
Initially, you will want to compose a 1 – 2 page early stage draft of a description of a success story from your life. Use freewriting and other brainstorming techniques to allow you to be unselfconscious about developing your content. You will want to make your writing specific and detailed!
In your next stage draft, please expand the content. Especially work to bring in descriptions of the different transferable/functional skill sets you used during the activity/project. Be as specific as possible.
In your late stage drafts, weed out all mistakes in grammar, spelling, punctuation, style! Remember, however, you will be most likely to lose the most points if your draft fails to meet the designated content length.
Finally, you will create a final draft that will be at least a full 3 pages but not go over 3 1/2 pages.
