Organizational Logic Argumentative Outline Directions
In order for an outline to be useful, it needs to be an argumentative one (not a subject based outline). You will be turning in this assignment at the same time as you turn in your midterm. That’s because although you start with an outline, as you write, you will find that you’ll need to reorganize because what you intended didn’t work out exactly. So you need to continue to revise your outline so that it matches your paper. You will need to copy and paste your outline into the assignment because you will be attaching the research article you found to this assignment as well.
Title: Make it descriptive of your perspective in this paper. So do not make it boring and vague like “History Paper” or “Race in America” [so we’re clear, those are bad titles]. A good title is one that intrigues, is slightly more specific, but not so specific that it’s longer than a short sentence.
Option: Let me know which question you are answering.
Option 1 is where you are addressing the experiences of two minorities.
Option 2 is where you are addressing the African American experience and White working class experience.
Option 3 is the alternative essay (the one where I created the bones of the outline for you already).
Word Count: provide the number of words in your essay. This only includes your essay, it does not include title, bibliography, nor citations.
Thesis Statement: Make sure your thesis statement follows the rules of what that is. If you do not have a thesis statement, your grade for thesis will not be a passing one. I have a whole video on what a thesis is, and the most common mistakes in mistaking something for a thesis. Make sure you have a real thesis statement. Make sure you followed the directions as presented in “How to Write a History Paper” section in this module. Having watched the video directions, you know that a thesis is in a way, a conceptual organizer of your paper. That is why this assignment is called organizational logic. The logic and organization of your argument should be easily apparent in this outline, as the parts all related to each other.
The thesis answers the question, and sets up the different parts of the body of the essay.
Topic Sentences: Make sure you know what topic sentences are. I cover them extensively in your “How to Write a History Paper” section. Topic sentences are like mini theses. They tell us what you are arguing in that part of the essay. They also connect to a part of the thesis. They are slightly more specific than each of the categorical parts in your thesis statement.
Evidence: You will need to bring in historical evidence to support each argument you make.
Primary Sources: You will need to provide a list of the primary sources that you used (yes I know that you’ve already provided how you will organize them, but this is a list count). You need to cite where you got them here. You can use the easy in-text format like this: (Lecture #7) or if a site (Virtual Jamestown)
Research Article
Provide the bibliographic information, and the word count of your article. Attach your article to this assignment.
Secondary Sources
Provide a bulleted list of all your secondary sources that you used (but you don’t need to list your research article here). Remember, you have a minimum of 6 different secondary sources (7 if you count your research article).
