Step 1:Pick a two-hour period during your day when you are going to take notice (and notes) of what you do. Make sure to pick a time slot when you are doing a variety of things (e.g. NOT when you are spending two hours to watch tv). Do not, however, pick a time when you are so busy that you cannot take notice or notes of what you are doing.
Step 2: During this two-hour period, take notice of what you are doing and why you are doing it—what are your thoughts, goals, reasons for acting this way, beliefs about why you should do this, emotions, etc. If possible, take some notes during this two-hour period. If not possible, then take notes afterwards. Organize your notes as two columns: one with a description of what you did (your actions) and the other of your thoughts, feelings, reasoning, etc while you did it.
Step 3: Write up a short analysis (600 to 900 words long) in which you describe(i)at least three actions you took during the two hour period, and(ii)why you made those actions. In doing so, make sure to use as many of Weber’s concepts as possible (e.g. was it social action or just action? what type of social action? What were your thoughts—verstehen–that guided or motivated those actions? In what ways do your actions/thoughts tie to power, whether it be related to the status, economic, or political order?)
