The Underground Railroad

       The Underground Railroad is a book written by Colson Whitehead and published in the year 2016. The name was symbolically used to portray the network of routes Black American slave workers fleeing from unfair treatment and torture they faced from their colonial whites. These inhuman experiences against the Africans occurred before the American civil war of the 1860s. The Black Americans had to look for ways to get their freedom and liberty through the most brutal ways possible, as some of their close relatives were maimed, tortured, and even killed by their white settlers whose farms they were working in. Thus, The Underground Railroad is an accurate representation of oppressive slavery and the search for liberation of the enslaved in the US. The following are some examples of characters drawn from the book and their behaviors that truly represent slave life. 

           Eleanor was born as a Black American slave, and her parents brutally tortured her when she was young. At one time, she unsuccessfully tried to escape together with her brothers, and she was never submissive at all. Following the cruel death of her parents, she vowed to look for freedom and liberty at whatever cost, even if it would cost her life. She organized herself to trek all the to the Northern route of Maryland in such of justice. She walked all the way alone, fearlessly as one would imagine. 

          Another character is Jason. He was one of the few people who helped Black Americans flee from the brutal treatment of the whites. He was considered brave. Jason would escort the vulnerable workers through the routes, guarding them against attacks from the whites and other Blacks who collaborated with the White Americans. He would ferry fugitive slaves through the Ohio River. Literally, Jason would act as a conductor for Black slaves throughout the Underground Railroad.

        Janice is portrayed as a slave who helped other slave workers with essential services throughout their journey. She would help with their food and shelter. Janice would also offer information on the whereabouts of the enemies of the fugitive slaves as they escaped. She would also organize legal assistance for Black Americans in case they were arrested.

         The book ‘The Underground Railroad clearly shows how slavery was carried out in the United States. Though it is full of fiction, it is beyond reasonable doubt that Africans were mistreated, their rights violated, and subdued to unnecessary suffering.
