The Research Proposal and Annotated Bibliography, designed to function as a step toward your Research Paper, must include

The Research Proposal and Annotated Bibliography, designed to function as a step toward your Research Paper, must include three items in one document:

THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL AND ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY ARE ON THE READING “THE OPEN BOAT”. BY STEPHAN CRANE

  1. A thesis statement (of your research paper) in 1-2 sentences. This should make a clear, precise, and arguable (not obvious) statement about a work of literature from our reading in this class (NOT Into the Wild or the text you chose for the application portion of the Critical Theory Multimedia Presentation). Excellent theses focus on a particular aspect of that work and sometimes have relevance outside of that text. You might consider focusing on a particular aspect of the representation of travel, place, the home, or migration and how this relates to identity; you might focus on a character you believe has been under-studied or under-appreciated; you might focus on a structural element of a poem; you might also focus on the intersection between a historical event, trend, or phenomenon and that work of literature. To meaningfully enter the critical conversation, you will also choose one work of literary criticism, a peer-reviewed article that makes a statement about your chosen text, to respond to in detail as a part of your thesis. For example, your thesis (using a hypothetical article) could be: Thomas R. Schneider argues for the importance of setting in Hamlet and that Elsinore mirrors the claustrophobia of Hamlets mind. This is true, but I will extend Schneiders Hamlet-focused perspective and demonstrate that the castle relates just as clearly to Gertrude and Ophelia, and that examining their characters with this in mind sheds light on the connection between physical space and mental space in the play.
  2. A proposal that describes, in one paragraph, why you chose to write about this topic and how you will approach and organize your essay.
  3. An annotated bibliography of at least five scholarly (peer-reviewed, academic) sources that you intend to use in your research paper, including the main source that you will respond to. This should look like a normal MLA Works Cited page but with a short, 2-4-sentence paragraph beneath each entry briefly describing the source and how you intend to use it in your paper. The other four sources will most likely provide context or support for your reading.
