To meaningfully enter the critical conversation, you will also choose one work of literary criticism, a peer-reviewed article that makes a statement about your chosen text, to respond to in detail as a part of your thesis. For example, your thesis (using a hypothetical article) could be: Thomas R. Schneider argues for the importance of setting in Hamlet and that Elsinore mirrors the claustrophobia of Hamlets mind. This is true, but I will extend Schneiders Hamlet-focused perspective and demonstrate that the castle relates just as clearly to Gertrude and Ophelia, and that examining their characters with this in mind sheds light on the connection between physical space and mental space in the play.
- A proposal that describes, in one paragraph, why you chose to write about this topic and how you will approach and organize your essay.
- An annotated bibliography of at least five scholarly (peer-reviewed, academic) sources that you intend to use in your research paper, including the main source that you will respond to.
