Leadership
Many think of leadership as just that the ability to lead in situations. To me, leadership is much more than just leading or directing a group of people. Leadership includes being competent leaders that can effectively communicate missions and visions. These leaders are knowledgeable about and supportive of quality improvement. The leaders care about accreditation, national performance standards, evidence-based decision-making, and collaborative decision-making. (Duggan et al., 2015). Leadership qualities are not necessarily something people are born with but gain over time and life experience. Perhaps Shelia Burke explained it best when she said, “leadership is taking ownership and helping people work through a process” (Moorefoundation, 2015, 0.37 Seconds).
My Experiences
I have witnessed outstanding leadership and horrible leadership. According to Broome & Marshall (2021), there are several theories for what makes a leader. My great leader was the one who inspired the staff to want to learn and gain higher credentials furthering our knowledge base. She is the one who inspired me to work toward obtaining my family nurse practitioner’s license. This lady would listen to and try to help any staff that needed her time and experience. She did not hesitate to get her hands dirty and would come out and take patients when we were understaffed on the unit. Her problem-solving skills made her one of the unit’s most valuable assets. Having a great leader can mean the difference between an uninspired staff or challenging themselves to gain more knowledge to better care for their patients. The ability to communicate with staff can make or break a leader. These essential skills allow the leader and his/her team to problem-solve together using round table discussions. Our textbook defines her as a theory Z leader (Broome & Marshall, 2021).
Effects of a Great Leader
Great leaders can help the working environment become pleasant even during the pandemic. The ability to laugh and stay lighthearted helped my unit continue caring and not become callous. This is because our leader got into the trenches with us and was side by side taking care of very ill patients. I have referenced above that she is why I pursued my education further. She was well-liked and did not care to do what needed to be done when it came time to discipline a staff member. She would say to pull your weight or pull us all down. She made our unit into a less toxic environment because she cared and did not just order staff around but worked with us in all ways.
