Create a “must read” list of 10 novels for high school students.
The Steps
Create a list of 5 criteria. Throughout the semester we’ve discussed how, in order for a book to be considered “timeless”, it needs to meet certain criteria (timeless, begs to be reread, unique, layers of meaning, writing style, critical lenses). Think about what makes a good book for high school students to read and then create your own set of criteria for placing a book on your “recommended reading list.”
Create your recommended reading list of 10 books. There are a number of places you can go for ideas:
Your friends and family — talk to others about the books that they read in high school. Their ideas can help you form your list of criteria as well.
Your own recommendations – think about the books that you’ve read in the last few years for either school or for pleasure. Please note that you do not have to have read the book in order to put it on your list.
The Internet. Search to find book lists and recommendations – consider looking up “award-winning” book lists for teenagers or “must read” lists for college-bound students. Pay close attention to the source–make sure that it’s credible.
Find a creative way to get this information to me (the list of 5 criteria and your 10 selections)–create a Google Slides presentation, make a video, use Google Docs or Jamboard, etc. For each novel on your list, you must include:
The title, author, copyright date, and book cover image
A brief description of the book–make this a concise overview of the plot
A justification for why it is on your list–what criteria does it meet, who recommended it, and why did you choose it?
