Discussion 1: Primary Roles of Medical Social Workers response to colleagues

Medical social workers assume various distinct roles in their practice. These roles range from educator and advocate to counselor, liaison, and mediator. The generalist intervention model (GIM) informs medical social work practice, with these roles reaching across each stage of the model. Medical social workers view patients and their problems in context, combine practice skills and techniques that meet the individual situation, and implement interventions across the multiple systems present in the patient’s life. The interventions are implemented on a continuum ranging from micro to mezzo to macro levels.

It is important to be mindful of the fact that patients are not the only people with whom medical social workers practice. It is not uncommon for medical social workers to intervene with family members and support caregivers, cooperate with members of the community, and collaborate with other health care professionals as well.

To prepare for this Discussion, think about the wide array of services provided by a medical social worker. Consider the roles, responsibilities, and scope of practice of the medical social work profession. Examine the medical social work practice skill within the GIM.

Description of three primary roles of medical social workers that you consider to be inspiring and rewarding. Explain why.

 

Social workers have many roles and responsibilities that they must adhere to. One of the most important roles of a social worker is to ensure that our clients are being taken care of and receiving the best care possible. Another primary role of a social worker is that they are accessing the needs of their clients. As discussed in Chapter 1, however, the basic function of social work remains, and social workers’ roles today reflect their responsibility for treating the whole person by taking a biopsychosocial approach to outreach, assessment, intervention, and care (Gehlert, & Browne,2019). Another primary role that a social worker has that is relevant is linking clients to services. Health social work tasks are congruent with the goals of the profession of social work and include helping clients problem solve and cope with life stressors; linking individuals with resources, services, and opportunities; promoting effective and humane service systems; and developing and improving social policy (Gehlert, & Browne,2019).

 

Explain how these roles directly support patients and their families. Explain how these roles might directly address three issues to patient care.

 

The roles that I described above directly support patients and their families as they are able to support and educate both. In the medical profession, many people who are sick often need help and many of them are in their dying stage depending on the situation. A social worker steps in and provides the patient with the necessary support to help both the client and patient on matters that they may not understand. These roles might directly address issues related to patient care by keeping patients informed and aware of their medical care as well as their families. Social workers’ roles are diverse, and social workers aspire to achieve total patient health as well as provide community and public service to bring about positive health status on a larger scale (Gehlert & Browne, 2019).

 

Describe specific interventions you might implement when performing your primary roles to resolve the three particular issues you selected.

 

Specific interventions that might be implemented when performing primary roles to resolve issues discussed would be collaborating with other members of the treatment team. Intervention that considers biopsychosocial issues related to health requires the use of a transdisciplinary team of professionals to address medical problems and concerns in a variety of settings (Gehlert & Browne, 2019). It would also involve following up with clients and families after treatment and discharge.

A description of three primary roles of medical social workers I consider to be inspiring and rewarding.

The three primary roles for medical social workers are case management, assessments, and discharge planning. Social workers will provide case management throughout the stay of the patient (Beder, 2006, p.9-10). Discharge planning will be conducted when the patients are getting ready to be discharged. Social workers will collaborate with the other medical professionals for recommendations. Social workers will coordinate recommended services. Social workers will speak with the patient and their families about the recommendations (Beder, 2006, p.12). The assessment is an important first step in the case management and treatment process. Assessment identifies needs, strengths, and supports (Gehlert, & Browne, Eds.,2019, p. 25). Working with patients can be rewarding and inspiring. Social workers help the patients, but the patient inspires the social worker. The patient’s determination is inspiring, and the patient’s success is rewarding.

 

These roles directly support patients and their families.

An assessment will need to be completed when patients initially enter the hospital. The assessment gives the social worker the opportunity to start building a rapport with the clients. The assessment will give the social worker the initial information about the potential needs of the client (Gehlert, & Browne, Eds.,2019, p. 25). Case management is initiated with the case is opened. The social worker will communicate with the patient and possible the family. Social workers will work in different areas within the medical field (Beder,2006, p. 9-10). Case management includes discharging planning and coordinating services (Gehlert, & Browne, Eds.,2019, p. 29). Discharge planning is one of the main roles for a medical social worker. The family will be involved in the discharge planning. The primary focus will be making referrals for services and coordinating the services. Discharge planning facilitates the patients return home with the needed supports (Beder,2006, p.11).

 

Specific interventions I might implement when performing my primary roles to resolve the three specific issues.

Medical social workers will address the emotional, medical. and psychological concerns of the patient. The social support of the patient will be examined as well. Medical social workers will work with the patient and family. Social workers examine their patient within their surrounding environments. Medical social workers will work collaboratively with other medical professionals and service providers. Medical social workers will have good problem-solving skills and investigative skills. Social workers will be knowledgeable about resources within the community (Craig, & Muskat, 2013, p. 8). An assessment will be completed when the patient is admitted to the hospital. This will give the social worker the initial information and start the process of building rapport (Gehlert, & Browne, Eds., 2019, p. 25). Social workers will meet with the patient and discuss the case and discharge planning. Medical social workers will provide case management while the patient is in the hospital (Gehlert, & Browne, Eds.,2019, p. 29).
