19 19 unread replies. 19 19 replies.
Step 1 Post your response to the discussion board.
With the introduction of huge amounts of technology and electronic documentation, it seems that we are moving further from providing hands-on nursing care to patients. How can we, as nurses, apply nursing informatics standards to personalize care for patients? Give some examples of how you have seen technology used to personalize care.
Step 2 Read other students’ posts and respond to at least two of them by Friday at 11:59pm Mountain Time.
Use your personal experience, if it's relevant, to support or debate other students' posts. Consider the methods of applying informatics to patient care that were discussed by other students. Share whether you agree or disagree with the methods they chose and explain why. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues professionally and provide examples to support your opinions.

Week 11 Discussion: How to Care Using Technology
Electrical medical records have helped me out with administering medication and avoiding medication errors. In my facility we use a software named Epic which allows nurses to document, create care plans, chart admissions, discharge, review medical history and administer medications to the patients. We also use "WOW's" which are workstations on wheels. I'm able to chart while i'm walking in and out of the patient's rooms. An advantage in using this technology is that it uses automated alerts which minimizes the chance for medical errors by warning providers about potential dangers such as a patient's allergy or a hazardous drug interaction. This happened to me the other day where I was supposed to give the patient a dose of Metoprolol. The WOW alarmed me and wouldn't allow me to administer the medicine. The error was that it was the wrong dosage. Instead of the required dose which was 25 mg, I was going to give them 100 mg. This prevented not only a medication error but also may have prevented the patient from becoming bradycardic or even hypotensive.

Technology is becoming more and more integrated into nursing care; in some ways this has been to reduce the risk of human error for example with automated vitals machines that no longer require nurses to take blood pressures manually and medication EMAR systems that require computer scanning of not only the medications but also the patient to lower any risks of creating an error. With the introduction of tele health nurses and other providers have also been able to deliver medical advice to those located in remote areas or just individuals that lack transportation. (HRSA, 2022) Despite the recent advances human to human interaction is still one of the most important aspects in nursing because that is what helps to establish trust. It is difficult to express everything you are feeling when facing a computer screen or text box which makes treatment plan less affective. Patients need the face-to-face interaction to know that what they are saying is important to the provider and that the provider has their best interests at heart. One thing technology has done for healthcare is save us time when dealing with patient which gives us more time to get to know them. We no longer have to waste time flipping through charts and looking through papers to find information on what we need, the electronic record has streamlined the process and allowed us more time to listen to what the patient is saying.
