Prompt:
“Sources are too unreliable and historians themselves [are too] biased, for us to truly have any certainty about past events. History is really just a lot of conflicting opinions.”
To what extent do you agree or disagree with the quote? Be sure to include examples to support your argument. (1-2 paragraphs MAX!!!)
Student identifies 3-4 major themes from the hex web.
Student explains significance of each theme
Students provides specific examples to support each theme.
Topic/Stimulus: School desegregation efforts go back to the late 19th century but had largely been unsuccessful due to the Plessy decision. Beginning in the 1930s, the NAACP began prepping for a Supreme Court test case that would become Brown v. the Board of Education, 1954. Your goal is to arrange the hexes so that connections between the various people/places/events is evident. Not all hexes may have more than one connection.
Task 1 Directions: ● Names, events and places associated with the Brown decision are written on the hex handouts. Cut
out the hexes. ● With a partner group the hexes in such as way that wherever the sides of one hex touch another
there is connection. (i.e. if only one side touches there is one connection, if two sides connect then there must be a connection between all the topics).
● If you need a quick refresher, look over the two slideshows from last spring.

Task 2 Directions: After connecting your hexes, identify 3-4 major themes/ideas/take-aways that you notice in your hex web. These could be the hexes with the most connections or hexes that have only a few connections but are especially important. Document your themes/connections here.
Segregation was in the center of the hexegone and it connected to little rock nine and brown vs. board for schools, and martin luther king jr and NAACP, and fergen marshall.
3 major themes I noticed were brown vs. board showed the segregation….
Significance of little rock nine was the first black students to attend an all white school, showing intergration.
Plessly vs furgenoson said segregation was constitulan if it was seperate but equal. Which connects to the Dorthy case because it shows the effect on Plesssly vs Ferguson which showed that things were not really equal.

Voices of Baltimore: Expectations
• Speculate how would it feel to know that you were selected or not selected to go to an integrated school? • Why do you think Ms. Evelyn J. Chatmon described herself as a
“bridge”? • Ms. Evelyn J. Chatmon makes reference to “speaking truth to power.”
What do you think this phrase means?
“I was first introduced to there is another world that is different than my own comfortable world.” Dr. Patricia Welch
• Why did Dr. Patricia Welch's teachers think she was not as smart as other students? • Ms. Treopia Washington Green's references her brother Ernest. Who was
he and why was his experience significant in Little Rock, Arkansas? How is this similar or different to the accounts in Baltimore ? • Dr. Walter Arthur Harris Gill describes a particular demographic group who
protested the most during school desegregation. Who does he reference and what climate did they evoke for the students integrating Poly? • Reflect on Dr. Patricia Welch’s realization “That I was first introduced to
there is another world that is different than my own comfortable world.” Have you ever had a similar experience or witnessed a similar experience?

The Big Take Aways
• What are the most important take-aways from the stories you have heard today? • How do these stories fit into the stories told by the documentaries we
watched at the beginning of the week? • Think about the newspapers we looked at covering the Brown
decision. Compare the tone of the reporting on Brown and the perspectives of the students who integrated the white schools?
