Bessie Smith, of no relation to Mamie Smith, was the most popular of the classic blues singers during the roaring twenties (Franklin and Higginbotham 2011). Many people think of Bessie Smith when they think of the Harlem Renaissance. She was the protégé of Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, and Smith also played in comic sketches. Smith could sell as many as 100,000 copies of a record in a week. Her debut release “Down Hearted Blues” sold more than 750,000 records in a year (Franklin and Higginbotham 2011).

Mamie Smith Sparks New Trend in American Culture CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO “CRAZY BLUES” SUNG BY MAMIE SMITH
Mamie Smith made history in August of 1920 when she became “the first black woman to release a blues record for a major company,” (Franklin and Higginbotham 2011:381). With the help of Perry Bradford Mamie Smith released “Crazy Blues” on the Okeh Records label. Bradford wrote the song and insisted that African Americans would like to listen to music performed by other African Americans. Bradford said, “14 million Negroes in our country…will buy records if recorded by one of their own,” (Franklin and Higginbotham 2011:382) and Bradford was right. More than 75,000 copies of Smith’s “Crazy Blue’s” were sold in Harlem within its first month of release.
Before Mamie Smith’s debut record companies had overlooked American American women’s talent. Mamie Smith opened the doors for many more black women, such as Bessie Smith, Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, Alberta Hunter, Ida Cox, Victoria Spivey, Sippie Wallace, and more. Mamie Smith paved the way for many large record companies to sign black artists and for the rise of male-dominated country blues. Black Swan Records was also opened by a black man, Harry Pace, for the the production of many black musical forms and for the advancement of African Americans (Franklin and Higginbotham 2011). Even though Black Swan Records went out of business after two years, it still made its mark on history.
