An important part of any first course is reflecting on what the start of your educational journey means while defining your goals and how you plan to achieve them. Considering the reasons you enrolled in this university, your place in it and the world, and how you’ll function as a human who will learn in a virtual university, are important to your success.
Writing is a process, not a one-time event. This week is an opportunity to further reflect on the last six weeks by adding onto, revising and proofreading the rough draft you began in Week 4. Introduction
After working in Nursing homes for over 25 years as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), I decided to continue my education. The inspiration behind this step is my desire to continue helping people, so I decided to become a social worker. I chose to become a member of the Walden community because I heard good things about this school, and they accepted over half of my credits.
Section 1
Today I am taking my online course on social work. The first-term course taught me the significant role I would play in positively impacting others’ lives. I have appreciated the need to understand others, listen to them, identify their needs, help them address those needs, and help them cope and improve the quality of their lives. The course has allowed me to meet and interact with people who desire to make a difference and stand up for others’ rights. I have had the opportunity to meet a diverse range of students who have all come together to make a real change and impact on someone’s life. I consider this a great opportunity since not every course can offer that.
As I start my educational journey, I plan to be fully human in this online academic world by taking control. I plan to manage my time better to achieve my goals. I plan to realize this by balancing work, school, family, friends, and other values I may pursue. I prepare by ensuring a consistent time and workspace and tuning out any distractions. Besides, I would plan my daily and weekly assignments and activities related to my programs, such as on-campus networking events and study group meet-ups. I am ready to embark on this journey since I have planned well. The tools and available support contribute to achieving my goals. I find several tools, including chats, discussion boards, zoom, Google classroom, classroom websites, and emails, useful for my online course. I find the Google classroom fascinating since the all-in-one tool makes learning accessible and flexible from where I am. I can easily access course material and track my performance as rated by the instructor.
The lectures have been excellent so far and offer exceptional knowledge of social work. The lecturers are all available and ready to help answer any questions you may have with a range of experiences they are willing to share. This has made my first-term course interesting and very informative. The class has been interactive and too engaging, which has given me a strong understanding of social work.
Section 2
I have managed the business of being a student by staying on task. I do not have any issues with my enrollment, program, or planned course. I already know the units I am supposed to take, the accreditation status of my program, tuition, and other additional costs, and how my classes will be administered. My time management and support network decisions include finding the time and a good study area. Finding a mentor could be easy, considering my good relationship with my lecturers and the range of experiences they have and are willing to share. My technical challenges could be an insecure and unstable internet connection. I would solve this by opting for a high-quality home service provider for a fast home internet connection. For security, I would avoid dangerous sites that could infect my device or entire schoolwork due to hacking threats. I would closely follow the instructor’s instructions about labeling, saving, and submitting files.
Section 3
Walden is committed to social change, hence; my choice to pursue further education in the institution is in and of itself an act of social change. In my current employment and community, I would contribute to social change at home by practicing random acts of kindness to make those around me happy and positively impact their lives. I plan to become a mentor to others in the program by drawing out my own experiences to demonstrate empathy and understanding of others’ problems. I would also offer others guidance to overcome the probes in their lives, including studies. The two university resources I find useful in my academic journey include the writing center and online library. The writing center will be useful in wring from writer’s block to creating an outline to proofreading. It offers a place to explore the differences between the various papers I will write throughout the course. The university’s online library provides resources for research and coursework without physically visiting the library.
