My topic of choice will be on Catheter-associated infections (CAI). It poses a severe

health risk among the elderly population because of their weaker immune systems and

increased susceptibility to infection. Because of their low healing, organ failure, and

mortality in the elderly, CAI complication can present a huge health risk among the elder. Practices such as excellent cleanliness and infection control are crucial to lowering the incidence of CAI in the aged populations.

The importance of the issue in nursing practice is that Nurse Practitioners play a critical role of promoting quality care among these patients. For instance, nurses can help elderly patients using catheters by educating and adhering to stringent hand hygiene guidelines.  Routinely monitoring and evaluating the catheter to minimize catheter-associated infections is crucial among the elderly. Also, they should make sure the drainage system is working properly and that the catheter is free of any obstructions or debris (Atkins et al., 2020). Nurses should also inform the elderly about the dangers of catheters and how to avoid infections.

Elderly people are more likely than younger people to get catheter-related infections. The elderly is the most user of catheters because of their weakened immune system, which makes it harder for their bodies to fight infections (Atkins et al., 2020).

The best intervention strategy for reducing catheter-related infections is the use of sterile technique. This technique is effective in eliminating all micro-bacterial that cause infections.
