The mixed-method study assessed the levels of psychopathy among 30 incarcerated men that were in the Mafia who were compared to a sample of 39 incarcerated men without affiliations to criminal organizations. The Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R; scores ranged from 0 to 40, with greater scores indicating higher levels of psychopathy) rated prisoners from the Pagliarelli prison in Palermo, Italy, which measured four dimensions of psychopathy: interpersonal (lying/manipulative), lifestyle (irresponsibility/impulsivity) affective (lacking empathy), and antisocial (poor behavioral controls). Mafia members received lower PCL-R affective, interpersonal, and total scores than the non-Mafia members, but antisocial and lifestyle scores were comparable across both groups. No Mafia members scored above 30 (the threshold for psychopathy), with only three scoring between 20 and 29. However, four non-Mafia members scored above 30, with 18 scoring between 20 and 29. Overall, Mafia members showed lower psychopathy levels, thus, a greater capacity for emotional connection and greater willingness to engage in rehabilitation programs compared to non-Mafia offenders, implying a greater chance of resocialization for incarcerated Mafia members.

Socia, K. M. (2012). The implementation of county residence restrictions in New York. Psychology, Public Policy, and Law, 18(2), 206-230. http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/a0024993

All New York U.S. counties that implemented residence restriction policies over five years were identified to explore the factors that encouraged their adoption. Focused on the residential and political atmosphere of 62 U.S. New York counties between November 2005 and December 2009 and examined factors that influenced residency restrictions by utilizing legislative files, 2000 U.S. Census Bureau variables, U.S. Census (2010) Population Estimates Program, New York State Board of Elections, and the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Computerized Criminal History Database. U.S. counties that implemented residence restrictions portrayed little influence on the encouragement for nearby U.S. counties to implement these policies; in other words, there is no “domino effect.” Political competition was heavily influential in the implementation of a county residency restriction, that is to say, U.S. counties where the majority party had a lower proportion of registered voters were more likely to have implemented a residency restriction. The rate of sex crimes in a U.S. county does not influence the likelihood of a residency restriction.

Mancini, C., Sheilds, R. T., Mears, D. P., & Beaver, K. M. (2010). Sex offender residence restriction laws: Parental perceptions and public policy. Journal of Criminal Justice, 38(5), 1022-1030. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jcrimjus.2010.07.004

The study was concerned with public opinion on residency restrictions, specifically examining whether parents with children were more supportive of residency restrictions than non-parents. In spring 2006, a telephone survey was conducted on 1,308 residents in Florida, which collected various opinions of criminal justice-related topics; in which the present study was focused on the opinions held by parents with children of sex offender legislation that enforced residency restrictions on registered sex offenders. Overall, many respondents (82%) supported residency restrictions; specifically, parents were 58% more likely to support such laws than non-parents. Further, a positive relationship was exhibited between the number of children and support for residency restrictions; in other words, as the number of children parents have, the greater the support for such restrictions, especially those with three or more children. Support for residency restrictions is consistent across moms, dads, various races, ethnicities, and ages.

Dargis, M., & Koenigs, M. (2017). Witnessing domestic violence during childhood is associated with psychopathic traits in adult male criminal offenders. Law and Human Behavior, 41(2), 173-179. https://doi.org/10.1037/lhb0000226

In this qualitative study, the psychological development of incarcerated adult males who witnessed domestic violence as juveniles was explored. The sample consisted of 127 incarcerated males between 18 and 55 from the same facility who had not been formally diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder or currently taking any psychiatric medications and who read at least a fourth-grade level coupled with a 70 or higher score on a standard intelligence test. Out of the total sample, 40% had met the criteria for psychopathy by scoring 30 points or higher on The Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R). There was a direct correlation between high PCL-R scores and witnessing domestic violence during childhood. This research indicates a relationship between childhood trauma and a psychiatric disorder in adults and differentiates the effects of witnessing domestic violence as unique from being directly involved in domestic violence as a juvenile on the development of psychopathy in adults.
