Case Study Narrative

Draw A Person Test is based on the assumption that an individual will be forced to

structure this relatively unstructured situation in accordance with his basic, typical, and unique

personality dynamics, revealing essential data about himself through his approach to the task of

drawing a person. DAP drawings are helpful in understanding the thinking and feeling of the

person. For this cultural case study, an interview and a DAP test was conducted.

The interviewee is a 25 year old man named Jhoan. I kindly asked him to be part of this

project and he accepted. Jhoan had a positive attitude toward the test and was willing to

cooperate all the time. Jhoan is a dreamer who has too many goals in life, he was not planning to

live in this country when he was a teen but as he says, “changes are part of life.” English is his

biggest challenge, he is aware that in order to be successful in college and in life, he needs to

learn English. Jhoan describes this country as the country of opportunities. Nowadays, he

considers that his English is not perfect but he feels more confident as time passes. Jhoan moved

to the United States five years ago with his twin brother and dad. He finished High School when

he was 18 in the Dominican Republic. Since he was waiting for the immigration visa process; he

decided not to enroll in a college in D.R. Instead, He spent a year working to save money. He did

not want his parents to spend money and then not finish the career. A person who has influenced

him the most is his mother . His mother raised him to be sensitive, cheerful and compassionate.

He describes his native country as beautiful, he loves Dominican food, the nature and the people.

On the other hand, he does not like the fact that people do not have opportunities. “If you really

want to pursue your dream, your family needs money. He works as a school aide in the morning

and as a dance instructor in the after-school which is a non-profit program. He came to this

country when he was 20 years old. He moved in with his brother and dad. His grandfather had 6

children, he decided to do the immigrant visa process for the family and that’s how he came here.

Unfortunately, his mom had to stay in D.R because she was not eligible to be part of the process.

On the other hand, during the test, Jhoan was very talkative, confused at times (because

he wanted to do a perfect job.) He took 20 minutes to do the drawing, however, he was worried

about the time. While drawing the picture, Jhoan demonstrated a normal behavior, however,

when he was telling the story about the person in the picture, he seemed nostalgic. It is evident

that he deeply misses his mother and that his family is everything for him.

My impression of the picture is positive. I see a happy mother waiting for his son. She is

smiling and her arms are open to receive love. I think that while doing the interview, he thought

about this moment and he just drew it in real life. At first, he drew a big head, then he decided to

erase the head and make it smaller. Face features are drawn and normal body parts as well. Legs

and feets are drawn and even the picture shows a mother wearing clothes.

The interview and the picture transmit a sense of nostalgia. One of the most important

members of the family is in another country. In other words, the family is separated. It seems that

Jhoan assimilated the host culture in a positive way, however he recognizes his limitations. It

seems that his family is a fundamental part of his life, especially the mother.
