Step 2: Getting Started with Tableau Tutorials to aid in completing the assignment can be found online at Tableau's Learning Center and Tableau’s Public Training site. To watch these training videos, you may first need to register yourself. Expand the “Getting Started” section and watch the video entitled:

1. Getting Started (25 minutes)

This tutorial will focus on the video found in the following sections only: ● Getting Started ● Connecting to Data ● Visual Analytics ● Dashboard and Stories

I have also created a playlist for you on LinkedInLearning.com. The training found here is broken down into smaller groupings so you can target specific areas of interest. To access this playlist please visit the following link: https://www.linkedin.com/learning/tableau-9-essential-training/

Step 3: Connecting to a Data Source Tableau can connect with various data sources such as text, excel files, and larger databases. The connecting to the data section of the tableau training will look at the basics of data connectivity with different sources.

1. View the Getting started video before attempting to continue. 2. Open Tableau.

a. When you first open Tableau you will be presented with this screen.

3. Connect to the “SuperStore Data Source” that comes with Tableau by selecting “ Sample Superstore” under the Saved Data

Sources section of Tableau.

You also have the option to Download a free data source from the tableau website under Sample Data Sets .

4. Connect your software to the sample -Superstore data source. Or you can follow the instructions found in the connecting to data tutorials.

5. Once connected you will see the screen below.

Step 4: Creating a Data View/Visualization

Create a meaningful visualization or view of the data. ● To create a visualization simply select which data fields

from the Data menu

● Drag them to the Columns and rows section of your report screen

● Select the appropriate combination of fields to provide a report that will be informative to the user.

a. As an example. Sales by region would require using the Sales field and the Region.

Tableau has multiple options to represent data in different views, applying filters/drill downs /formatting, creating sets, and groups, generating trend lines, and performing forecasting. One big dilemma that you will face while creating data visualization is which object should you choose to represent data. Which chart or graphic is right for the data visualization you would like to create? The feature of automatic selection of views available in tableau takes care of this issue largely. This feature automatically activates the best views for selected dimension(s) and measure(s). Additionally Tableau created this document to help guide your decision and the Interworks website provides a wealth of information on chart types.

Step 5: Create a Dashboard Create a dashboard including at least two meaningful visualizations from your worksheets.

● To create a Dashboard click on the “New Dashboard” button on the lower left of your screen. (To the right of the tabbed worksheet views).

● A new window will appear with a blank box with the words “Drop sheet here”. This is an indication that your Dashboard was created but you’ll need to select which two of your existing worksheet reports to include as part of that dashboard.

● Select your worksheets by clicking the name of the worksheet dragging it and placing it on top of the dashboard area/stage.

● This will result in a dashboard showcasing 2 or more of your selected worksheet reports.

Step 6: Submit the assignment

Upload as your submission a screen capture of the dashboard, screen captures of each created visualization, and the Tableau Packaged Workbook file. (.TBWX)
