4-2 Activity: Critique (User Testing) in Graphic Design

12292Overview
In the design thinking process, after empathizing, defining a problem statement, and creating mockups, designers often test their work with end users. This helps to adjust their design based on user responses. The Testing phase is used to refine one or more design mockups. While initially empathizing with the target audience helps the designers understand their preferences, testing mockups with them offers a deeper insight into their response to an actual design. Critiques from end-users or the target audience also remove the designer’s personal preferences from their own evaluation of a mockup.

Scenario
You are a junior graphic designer working at a large graphic design firm that focuses on providing branding, marketing, and advertising solutions for clients in various industries.

A family-friendly food truck located in Denver, Colorado, has approached your design firm because they were not generating enough sales despite offering an extensive menu catering to several cuisines including, but not limited to, Mexican, Italian, American (burgers and fries), and Asian (stir fries). They suspect that their advertisement is not attractive enough for their target audience. Their marketing team has collected user-response data by interviewing existing customers and showing them a sample advertisement.

You have been given feedback from the end users along with their demographic details (age group, marital status, and family type), preferences, and visual expectations in the Module Four Activity Design Brief. You need to review the feedback to determine the potential changes the advertisement needs for better engagement with the target audience.
