Social Justice Assignment
The social justice problem that I have chosen is child abuse. Child abuse, a significant issue in society, is a form of neglect or abuse committed by a parent, caregiver, or other custodial person to children under 18. Physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse are the different types of abuse. When abuse or neglect is suspected, a mandated reporter must report the child abuse or neglect. Mandated reporters conclude that social workers, teachers, healthcare professionals, and other professionals The issue of social justice can significantly affect children by causing mental health issues, parenting issues, or difficulties in school.
Child abuse could also impact the community by the lack of awareness of how it's possibly affecting a child. Therefore, it is common for a child to become violent due to the trauma that they have endured as a child. Children who are subjected to abuse and lack mental resources are more likely to commit crimes or engage in juvenile delinquency.According to (Facts and Stats About Child Abuse | Child Protect, n.d.) “Abused and neglected children are 11 times more likely to engage in criminal behavior as an adult”.
The mission of the Department of Social Services is to promote the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and vulnerable adults, help individuals achieve stability, and strengthen families. The agency addresses child abuse by making child safety a top priority. An example will include removing children from a home where there have been allegations of domestic violence by the parents and the children were missing school. The Department of Social Services placed the children in kinship care since there was maltreatment and educational neglect.
Child abuse can be related to another social justice problem substance abuse. Substance abuse can be related to child abuse because a child can later depend on different types of substances to cope with their abuse. In recent years from 2021-2022 and 2022-2023, data gathered from SCDSS CAPSS, the children sustained in child protective services accepted for investigations improved. The number decreased by 335 in the Midlands Region. Groups offered in my community to support the agency when addressing the social problem are workshops offered to parents and counseling sessions. The Department of Social Services uses its resources within the agency when working with clients and is free to those clients.

The social justice problem I chose was Child Abuse. I chose this problem because of a shadowing I completed with a investigation case manager at my agency and I wanted to bring awareness to this topic.
Child Abuse can cause cause emotional and physical damage to children under the age 18 by a parent, caregiver or another person in a custodial role.
There are a few types of abuse. Physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse and emotional abuse are the different types of abuse. When there is abuse suspected, it is important for a mandated reporter to report it.
Statistics
Data collected from CAPSS, based on the data Intake accepted for Investigation is 4,107 children.
Field Placement
