The three elements of persuasion include an understanding of people, the effective use of words, and the ability to manage conflict. I have persuaded a coworker to change her eating behavior. I sat down with her to try to get a better understanding of her and why she does not take the best care of herself. I let her know how I eat has changed my whole behavior and how it makes me feel more confident and healthier. I tried to ensure that if she is eating better, she will become more confident and comfortable within herself. I told her that she will have more energy and want to go out and do things with friends again and how it will be better in the future if she takes care of herself now. I then told her to just start counting her calories on the MyFitnessPal app, making it so she can watch how much she intakes but does not have to cut out foods that she enjoys. She just has to eat smaller portions. Also, instead of eating at fast food restaurants, I told her she can meal prep and it will save her money.
The element that I found most challenging was the ability to manage conflict because it is easy for people to give tips, but ensuring that the person actually does it is the hard part. I feel bad because I can only give my advice and after that it is on them to commit. It made me feel really proud when she came to me a few days later and told me she really dove deep into what I told her and she started counting her calories and has been going on long walks each day with her dog. I know the dog was happy about that one.
