Purpose

This project’s purpose is to write an outline in preparation for writing an analytical paper.

Course Outcomes Satisfied by this Project

describe the historical development of the American political system and its impact on current issues in American government

analyze the impact of demographic factors (such as race, age, gender, and socioeconomic class) on the American political system

understand the role of argument, cultural sensitivity, and ethics in order to effectively engage in political discourse, communicate persuasively, and influence public policy

Background:

Pineda asks you into her office. She explains that she is working on a large project and needs you to complete a portion of it for her. Pineda is creating an educational program for advanced high school and college level students. Part of the curriculum focuses on relating current events to the historical development of the American political system as well as how cultural sensitivities and ethics influence public policy issues. Since you are new, she is letting you have a choice between two portions of the project. Pineda asks you to prepare a no more than 4-page (double-spaced) analysis of ONE of the following topics listed below.

As part of the curriculum, the PolicyPulse package includes an outline. Outlines are a great writing tool that help to organize one’s ideas, flush out and develop points and get a sense of the paper’s structure. A well written outline often makes the writing process much easier as it provides you with a road map to guide your writing.

Pineda asks you to write an outline based on your thesis statement from Week 2. The outline must be on the same paper topic as your thesis statement. For this project, please use a full sentence outline. Pineda explains that in a full sentence outline, full sentences are used at each point in the outline. For more details on how to write an effective outline, and some sample outlines, please read: Outlining or email your professor.

Paper Topics:

Choose a current event involving the American government and discuss how the historical development of the American political system impacts your chosen current event.

Choose a current public policy issue and argue how cultural sensitivities and ethics are influencing your issue.

Instructions:

Write a full sentence outline based on your thesis statement in Step 1.

Include main topic ideas that support your thesis and are on topic
Include statements of evidence from solid academic sources that support the main topic ideas
Use proper format including Roman numerals for headings, capital letters and numbers for statements of evidence
Include citations in APA formatting for all sources of factual information and ideas that are not your own
