One example of a great leader in the U.S. Army today is General Randy George, the current Chief of Staff of the Army. I see him as an effective leader because he demonstrates both transformational and servant leadership. He constantly emphasizes caring for soldiers and families while preparing the force for future challenges. Transformational leadership is about inspiring others to see beyond themselves and work toward a bigger vision, while servant leadership focuses on prioritizing the needs of others (Mumby & Kuhn, 2019). General George does both by motivating soldiers toward readiness and innovation while ensuring they feel supported.
On the other hand, an example of ineffective leadership in Army history is General George McClellan during the Civil War. While he was skilled at organizing troops, he often hesitated to act, which frustrated President Lincoln and slowed progress. His approach leaned more toward authority and control rather than inspiring trust and initiative. A transformational style would have allowed him to build confidence and momentum with his troops.
For myself, transformational leadership feels like the best fit. I enjoy helping others grow, encouraging them to reach their potential, and working together toward the mission’s success (Mumby & Kuhn, 2019).
