Five of the leadership truths from Kouzes and Posner (2010) that resonated with me the most are:
-Trust rules
-Challenge is the crucible for greatness
-You make a difference
-You either lead by example or you don’t lead at all
-The best leaders are the best learners
To me these feel foundational and not just for leadership roles but how we show up in our everyday lives.
There are several leaders that I admire who embody these truths. Satya Nadella of Microsoft shows that leaders “make a difference” by transforming its culture through innovation and empathy. Howard Schultz, Starbucks, demonstrated that “trust rules” by centering employee well-being as the basis of organizational success. Then Elon Musk of course even despite the controversy he illustrates the truth of “challenge is the crucible for greatness” through his constant push for disruptive innovation. In my own personal life my former platoon sergeant absolutely embodied the idea that you must “lead by example” by never asking any of his soldiers to do anything that he wouldn’t do himself. Lastly, for me is a fellow master instructor that I work with in the Army. He lives out the truth that “the best leaders are the best learners” by his continuous research, publishing, and embracing professional growth in his field.
Applying these particular truths to my own leadership style, I try to approach work with the mindset of that my contributions do matter even if my current role isn’t formally supervisory. Being able to build trust, remain open to challenges I experience, model the behavior I expect from those around me, and continue to learn are all ways I can develop into the leader I hope to become. As I continue to advance in my career being able to stay committed to these truths will help shape how I influence others and how I handle responsibility.
I believe that together these five truths most closely align with authentic leadership because they provide emphasis on trust, personal growth, self-awareness, and leading using one’s values. Authentic leaders prioritize continuous learning, transparency, and ethical behavior which are all core elements reflected in the truths I selected (Northouse, 2022).
