Awesome and informational case study. The impact of childhood physical and sexual abuse has been well documented as a precursor to substance abuse. Persons who have been sexually abused can suffer a range of psychological and behavioral problems. In her studies, Fletcher (2020) confirms a clear relationship between sexual abuse and substance use as this might serve as a coping mechanism for stressors associated with the abuse. Adults who experience these traumas often turn to drugs and alcohol to self-medicate.
Childhood sexual abuse is often associated with various negative outcomes in adolescents such as social withdrawal, depression, anxiety, and substance use disorder. Moreover, these victims may have trouble with trust, post-traumatic stress disorder, guilt, and shame. Physical abuse leads to anger issues, aggression, and anti-social behaviors.
Any form of abuse is a severe threat to the physical and psychological well-being of the child or adult. When treating substance abuse disorders in patients, it is necessary to obtain detailed sexual abuse history to help formulate an appropriate treatment plan of care.
My question is: Following the history of her childhood sexual trauma and now substance abuse, I agree with you she can be helped from psychotherapy. What type of therapy can she benefit from and why do you think that would be a better fit?
