How Would You Vote? Defend Your Decision.
Scenario:
Being a responsible consumer involves synthesizing available information in making decisions. Your concern for sustainability and for the future of the world’s oceans leads you to want to make the best possible decisions related to seafood consumption and to be able to advocate for the best approach to maintaining the health of aquatic systems.
Debate Question:
Based on your knowledge of the pros and cons of aquaculture versus sustainable harvest of wild species, what is your stance on the best approach for responsible seafood consumption? Defend your decision using evidence-based decision making.
Summary of research and evidence:
In the previous section of this activity, various studies were presented. Each was backed by data, yet some of the evidence and conclusions were contradictory. While some data suggest that marine protected areas can restore the health of aquatic systems, other studies indicate that it is not possible to guarantee sustainable harvest of resources. Similarly, while aquaculture can be seen as an inefficient use of resources, it is allowing seafood production to increase while diverting fishing pressure from wild stocks. Weigh this conflicting evidence in arriving at your own stance on the best approach to managing ocean resources sustainably. Feel free to draw on additional research to defend your position. Make sure you cite your sources.
Debate and Defend:
In 5-10 sentences, explain how you would vote. Defend your decision using evidence-based decision making.
