Each question should be answered with at least two paragraphs of approximately 4-5 sentences at least.

Question Description
here you read art historical scholarship as a secondary source last week, this week you will read and engage with artists’ statements as primary sources to see how artists understand and theorize their own work. All of the short selected artists’ interviews and statements in your reading this week are related to works of art that we have studied in the second half of this course. We will ask you engage in debates about how the meaning and concept of art has changed since the beginning of this course.

Each question should be answered with at least two paragraphs of approximately 4-5 sentences at least.

1) After reading Duchamp’s “The Richard Mutt Case” and “The creative act,” take a position on Duchamp, Fountain, 1917. In your opinion, is Fountain a work of art or not? Why or why not? Explain what your standards are for defining a work of art, and whether Fountain fits your criterion. How does your understanding of the meaning of art differ from Duchamp’s concept of art?

2) Select any one of the artist’s statements or interviews, except for Duchamp, that really interested you.

For the first paragraph, write a short formal analysis of the key work (discussed in lecture) by the artist that you have selected.

For the second paragraph, summarize what the artist is trying to say about their own work in the interview or statement. Then, reflect on how your experience as a viewer differs, or not, from how the artist describes their own work of art. How does the artist’s point of view differ from yours? What do the artist’s choices reveal about their beliefs, perspective, histories, understanding of the world, and how might these choices differ, or not, from their interview or statement? Finally, does the artist’s perspective change your point of view, or does your perspective stay the same?

Note: There are no right answers here. You don’t have to feel forced to be moved by a work of art.
