40120You must write a 1800-2000 word essay (maximum 2200 words) on the application of a named analytical technique to biomolecular analysis. See below for a list of titles.
Your introduction should cover principles, theory and instrumentation of your chosen technique, appropriate and relevant to your essay title. The introduction should be no longer than about 650 words. Avoid being too general or pitching the introduction at too low a level. Ensure that the instrumentation you discuss is modern and not outdated.
The main part of the essay (the discussion) should concentrate on the applications of the technique to the topic title. Examples of the applications should be taken from the primary literature. Avoid using examples taken from text books, websites, etc. If you have found an example in a review article, find and use the original reference. You should discuss examples that are recent, preferably within the last 10 years. The discussion should be at least about 1300 words.
The essay must be correctly referenced in a suitable style, e.g. Harvard, and the references must also be correctly listed in the reference list.
Put a heading “Introduction” at the start of your introduction, and a heading “Discussion” at the start of the discussion section (main part of the essay).
Give the word count of the introduction, the word count of the discussion, and the total word count. Students will be significantly penalised for essays longer than 2200 words. The word count excludes in-text referencing, headings and the reference list.
The number of students per title is restricted to ensure an equal distribution across the module content. Titles will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis for applications received on or after 9:30 pm on Nov 7st 2018. You must email Dr Edgar Liu with the number as your first, second and third preferences. You must do the submission before Nov 12th 2018. Your assigned topic will be announced on Nov 14th.
Your essay must be word-processed. Use 12 point font size for the main text. Use 1½ or double line spacing, and leave adequate margins (at least 2 cm all round).
You are expected to make use of references taken from the primary scientific literature. You will be expected to refer to a minimum of 3 primary references for a bare pass grade, more for higher grades.
“Primary scientific literature” refers to scientific papers in (usually) peer-reviewed journals, in which the author(s) is (are) presenting the results of their own research. “Primary scientific literature” does not refer to reviews, in which the author(s) is (are) reviewing previously published papers.
In addition to – but not instead of – references from the primary scientific literature, you may also use other sources of information, e.g. details of instrumentation from manufacturers’ specifications, example analyses from manufacturers’ application notes, books, authoritative websites, etc.
Be very careful when using information from websites. “Authoritative” websites (e.g. UKAS, other professional organizations, educational institutions, etc) should be accurate but many other sites are not.
Journal references found using Sciencedirect, Pubmed or other on-line sources are simply on-line versions of peer-reviewed journals, and the usual bibliographic details of the paper including all authors, journal title, volume and page numbers must be given in the reference list. There is no need to include the web address of the on-line version of the paper. NB “journal title” means the title of the publication, e.g. Journal of Mass Spectrometry, NOT the title of the article (usually called “the paper”).
If you have to quote a website as reference, DO NOT put the web address in the text. This goes in the reference list between angle backets (). See the information on referencing on the Learning Centres website. (But note that you should put “accessed on” for the date that you looked at the website, not “cited on” as suggested by the learning centre.)
www.google.com, www.sciencedirect.com etc are NOT references. They are search engines.
Important Note
Do not even think about quoting Wikipedia as a reference for any piece of information. There is no guarantee of the accuracy of information on Wikipedia. Wikipedia can however be very useful as a source of ideas at the start of a literature search, where it is good for identifying search terms, subject headings and sub-headings, etc.
