Peer 1: Job design is defined by Heizer and Render (2005) as “an approach that specifies the tasks that constitute a job for an individual or a group.” There are five primary characteristics which make up a good job design. These are: skill variety, job identity, job significance, autonomy, and feedback. If these five aspects are taken into account while designing jobs, the job will fulfill the needs of workers for job enlargement, job enrichment, and employee empowerment (Heizer & Render). What might sound like a horrible job to one person, might not seem so bad to someone else. Some of the worst jobs I can think of are trash man, school bus driver, and tollbooth worker. I don’t think these would be very good jobs for a few reasons. First, none of them pay very well. Second, there really isn’t a good way to move up in the company from those jobs. Third, the job requires very little skill level and isn’t challenging. Lastly, other than the intrinsic rewards a school bus driver has, these jobs aren’t very rewarding. One of the important factors to a good job design (according to Heizer & Render, 2005) is feedback. Promotions are a type of feedback which is one thing I will implement to redesign these jobs while improving productivity.

Peer 2:One of the worst jobs in my opinion is fast food restaurants. There are a few different reasons why, the work can be tedious and fast food restaurants don’t typically pay well. You are consistently dealing with all different kinds of personalities while working and aren’t always treated very nice. The lack of pay would make it pretty hard to tolerate. It also isn’t a very prestigious job, you typically attribute fast food as a start up job that is fairly low on the totem pole. While there are some fast food restaurants that are a little more prestigious than others, fast food has those social stigmas attached to them. A lot of employees probably don’t care all that much, it’s hard to take the job fully serious making minimum wage. You can get more productivity from your employees by raising the starting wage a little. One thing I would do to help productivity is add some type of incentive for the employees. I’m sure they have goals they need to make that has to do with customers per minute in the drive thru or something. Add an incentive to that, where they are rewarded for making the goal for the entire year or something like that. They need to make that job feel more rewarding, and not feel like they are withering away at a fast food establishment. Another bad job I know about are entry level retain jobs. They are very thankless jobs, that require hard work and are consistently getting squeezed for more productivity by corporate. I know this from experience. There are many negative things about retail, and anyone that has worked retail knows this. Customers are clueless, and are thankless for the work you do. They will destroy an area of a store then complain that your store is messy. They will piss all over the bathroom then complain your bathrooms are messy. Corporate designates a task takes 3 hours, they give you 1 hour to do it. Some companies like Target are starting to raise their base pay to be more competitive and bring in more dedicated and experienced employees. They are hoping that higher pay will increase productivity. I agree, it will but only to an extent, they can’t expect unrealistic results just because they starting pay at $15 an hour. Adding incentives for goals met also would help productivity. Having employees be empowered is a little thing but can increase productivity.
